New Plymouth and Beyond
This tour shows you what Taranaki is made of, including a day to enjoy all New Plymouth has to offer! Our region was named second-best region to visit by Lonely Planet for the range of activities here – from galleries to Egmont National Park. You’ll get to experience it all and more!
Tour Includes:
- 4 Nights accommodation (private room, with double bed in house with sea and mountain views)
- Entry to all attractions (except for one optional museum visit)
- Small group travel (maximum of 10 people on tour)
- All transport during tour in a 12-seater mini bus
- Short film of the tour experience
- Pick up and drop off from New Plymouth Airport or Bus Station
- Two gourmet dinners (drinks extra), one breakfast
- A handcrafted (by you!) titanium pendant of Mount Taranaki
- Tour guide to accompany you on your day trips
Cost: $1600 (single); $1450 (double – based on shared room/bed)
As this tour starts first thing in the morning, we recommend arriving the day before it begins. Accommodation for the night before the trip is included in the tour price. The day of arrival will not have any scheduled activities but the driver will be available to take you into New Plymouth (4 km from accommodation) for dinner.
Day 1 – Gardens and Art
- Breakfast and morning walk on The Coastal Walkway to the Wind Wand and the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge
- Pukeiti Rhododendron Garden Tour (one of the world’s biggest and most diverse rhododendron collections, uniquely nestled in rainforest)
- Scenic Drive to Okato for lunch
- Visit two artist’s galleries and take part in a jewellery making workshop to make your very own pendant of Mount Taranaki
- Finish day at Okurukuru Winery for a 5 course degustation menu (included)
Day 2 – Museum and Nature
- Drive to the charming, rural town of Inglewood for cafe breakfast
- Optional visit to the Fun Ho! toy museum or explore Inglewood on foot
- Leave by 11am for Tawhiti museum (widely acclaimed as the best private museum in the country)
- Lunch at a cafe in South Taranaki’s largest town, Hawera
- Scenic drive to Dawson Falls entry to Egmont National Park
- Walk to Wilkies Pools via the ‘goblin forest’ (1 hr 20 mins roundtrip) or to Dawson Falls (20 mins roundtrip)
- Enjoy a 3 course meal at the Dawson Falls Mountain Lodge (included)
- Relax on the drive back to accommodation
- Optional drinks in New Plymouth bar after short rest at accommodation
Day 3 – In the City
- Continental Breakfast at accommodation (muesli, yogurt, cereal, toast, fruit)
- Driver will take everyone into New Plymouth’s CBD
- Visit Puke Ariki, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery & Len Lye Centre
- Optional lunch with group at cafe in CBD
- Walk or drive to Pukekura Park
- Visit fernery and enjoy this garden of national significance
- Spend a couple hours shopping and exploring CBD
- Meet back with tour for drinks and dinner in CBD
- Head back to accommodation after dinner
The order of the days may change seasonally or due to weather. We require at least 6 people for the tour to run. Dates are flexible, if we don’t have the dates you want listed, contact us to discuss what we can do. For the meals that are not included in the tour, we suggest guests budget an additional $160+
As the owner of Kiwi Burd Tours is a documentary filmmaker, she will accompany your tour and film the experiences. If you prefer not to be featured, you can let her know and she’ll do her best to keep you in the background without any feature section on you. Film to be completed shortly after tour, depending on seasonal tour demand.
